A forever home: Why some parrots stay with us?
Our sanctuary offers a different kind of "forever home" for some residents. Our permanent residents are the parrots whose past experiences have left them with special needs that make re-homing impossible or unethical. For these birds, the sanctuary is not a temporary stop, but their final destination, where they can live out their lives in peace and security. Many of our permanent flock members have complex histories that include:
- Multiple homes: Parrots live for a very long time, sometimes up to 80 years or more. This means they often outlive their owners or are re-homed multiple times throughout their lives, a stressful and traumatic experience for these social animals.
- Abuse and neglect: We provide a haven for parrots who have suffered from neglect, abuse, or improper care. Their behavioral and emotional needs are often too complex for a typical home environment.
- Physical or medical issues: Some of our birds have chronic health conditions or physical disabilities that require specialized, long-term care from our dedicated veterinary team.
Here, they can finally heal and just be birds. They form bonds with our family, volunteers, and other parrots, receive individualized care tailored to their unique personalities, and enjoy the enrichment and safety they deserve. They are the heart of our mission and the best evidence of the critical need Sanctuary.
